Engr. Ali Gumel is an experienced engineering and sustainability professional with over 14 years of industry experience spanning energy, oil and gas, cement manufacturing, and large-scale infrastructure projects. He currently serves as Assistant Director, Health, Community, Safety and Environment (HCSE), where he provides strategic leadership in environmental and social governance, operational safety, and risk management. He holds a Master’s Degree in Gas Engineering and Management from University of Salford, Manchester (UK), and a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Engr. Gumel is a registered member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), as well as a member of the Association of Energy Engineers. His professional credentials also include international certifications in HSE risk management, CO₂ and energy management with the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA), and IFC Performance Standards implementation. He played a key role on the BUA Refinery & Petrochemicals Project, Akwa Ibom, where he coordinated the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) process in compliance with Nigerian regulatory requirements and IFC Performance Standards. His contributions included leading social performance plans, participating in FEED-stage HAZOP reviews, supporting Quantitative Risk Assessments, and supervising field investigations, geotechnical works, and regulatory engagements. Earlier in his career, he served as Energy and Safety Manager at the BUA Cement OBU Plant, overseeing natural gas supply operations, pipeline integrity programs, process water supply systems, and the development of a robust safety culture and emergency response framework. He also gained foundational experience in pipeline construction and quality control through various engineering roles within the BUA Group.
